Giuseppe Verdi's clothes The clothes on exhibit at Casa Verdi come from the room in the Hotel de Milan in which the composer died. They were donated by Commendatore Giuseppe Spatz, the hotel's proprietor, along with other objects found in the hotel, where the Master usually stayed. The hats bear the label of the Antonio Ponzone hat factory in Milan (Provider to the Royal Family), but the hat box bears the famous trademark of the Borsalino factory.
Spinet Marco Jadra (second half of the 16th century) The spinet, contained in a poplar case resting on supports not from the same period, has been attributed to the Venetian Marco Jadra, who was active in the second half of the 16th century. Constructed in all likelihood around 1560, it was the first instrument on which the young Verdi practiced, and it was restored in 1821 by Stefano Cavalletti, as one learns from the writing in ink that appears on the lower surface of the lever of the highest key: “By me Stefano Cavalletti these jacks and leather plectra were done anew and I adapted the pedals which I gave as a gift; as I also gave gratis the said jacks, seeing the good willingness that the boy Giuseppe Verdi has for learning to play this instrument, this is enough for me to be completely satisfied. Anno Domini 1821.”
Plaster casts of the hand and death mask of Giuseppe Verdi In the display case, which was probably built to architect Camillo Boito's design, the plaster casts of the hand and of the death mask of Giuseppe Verdi are preserved; they were made the day after the Master's death. 1 » |
